Another idea in Spark Joy that has surprised me is the distinction drawn between cleaning and tidying. To me the two seemed synonymous, but the book explains that:
Cleaning is a confrontation with the natural process of things becoming dirty. Dust falling, dirt being tread into the house.
tidying is a confrontation with the self. Do I really need this item in my life? If so, where does it belong??
I guess this might be an obvious distinction to some, but it certainly helps me figure out what it is that we're supposed to be doing in this process. It's not about cleaning, it's about tidying.
